Commemorating Black August

this is the last week of black august

black august began in the 1970s to mark the assassination of the revolutionary george jackson- an imprisoned black panther and author, during prison rebellion in california. this month is meant to honor all political prisoners and their work to resist injustice and oppression. black august highlights principles of unity, self-sacrifice, political education, physical training and resistance
.
black august is also significant due to the numerous actions, uprisings and rebellions by black folks throughout history that have occurred in the month of august- including the haitian revolution, the nat turner rebellion, the founding of the underground railroad, the march on washington, the watts uprisings and the ferguson uprisings
.
additionally, many black agitators and resistors were born during the month of august- marcus garvey and fred hampton. or passed on during the month- w.e.b du bois and jonathan jackson
.
